One of the strategic goals of Indiana Muslim Advocacy Network (IMAN Associates) is to mobilize the Muslim vote. To achieve this goal, the organization took the first step and collected data about the concentration of Muslim voters in house and senate districts around the state. Each election cycle, the organization plans to identify competitive races, hold voter registration drives, publish voters education guides or lead Get Out the Vote (GOTV) campaigns.
2020 Indiana General Election:
For the 2020 General Election on November 3, we are excited to share with you a Voters' Guide that shines a spotlight on select Congressional, State Senate and House Districts. These districts not only have heated races, but also a concentration of Muslim voters who can move the needle on those races.
2018 Indiana Mid-term Election:
In the few weeks leading up to 2018 mid-term elections, IMAN Associates, in collaboration with Emgage USA and Faith in Indiana, ran the first Muslim-to-Muslim GOTV campaign in Indiana. It was a unique GOTV campaign targeting the 2018 mid-term senatorial elections in State Senate District 29 (SD29). With the help of its collaborating partners, IMAN Associates was able to identify and compile a list of registered Muslim voters in Senate District 29, which includes portions of Hamilton, Marion and Boone counties. This district was strategically chosen for the targeted campaign because it is the most densely Muslim populated senate district in Indiana. Given the competitive nature of this race and the density of Muslim voters in district 29, Muslim Hoosiers had the unique opportunity to voice their political opinion and impact the electoral results in this high-profile senate race.
40+ volunteers participated in two phone banks on October 10, 2018 and October 27, 2018 at Masjid Alfajr. They made 3,326 calls to registered Muslim voters in SD29, Hamilton and Marion counties; they left 681 voicemails and had 188 conversations and urged Muslim registered voters to get out the vote on or before Election Day. Response rate for this campaign is 26%, which speaks to its success.
Phone Banks Impact: When measured, voter turn-out increased by 7.25%. In other words, Muslim voters who were contacted by our volunteers were 7.25% more likely to go out and vote than those who were not contacted.
